Living On My Own

Please enjoy this Ari Lennox song that was LITERALLY my theme song when I moved.

I have been in my apartment for almost 7 months, and I am still getting used to living on my own, but chillllle…I LOVE IT! It’s so beautiful and peaceful and nice. I have always loved having my own space, and now I have ALL the spaces.

When I first moved, I of course knew I needed items, like: a bed and bedding, dishes and utensils that are not plastic like I’m still in college, living room furniture so people wouldn’t be standing around, bathroom towels and shower essentials, cleaning supplies, and shot and wine glasses: all of the important items; however, there are some things I didn’t realize that I needed, or I didn’t even think to get.

TOOLS

When I first moved into my place, my dad gave me some tools to use and I remembered thinking to myself, “What am I supposed to do with these?” Well, I figured out exactly what I was suppose to do with them when I ordered a desk from Wayfair that I needed to assemble. (I could have bought it pre-assembled, but it was going to cost more than the actual desk, so that was a no.) I felt super legit assembling the desk that I just bought with the new tools that I had…until I realized that I assembled a few items incorrectly. (That’s what happens when you fail to read directions.) Luckily, I was talking to a guy at the time who loved building things. He saw my incomplete desk and felt it was his duty to fix it. Who was I to deny him of his passion for putting things together? While he used the tools, I used another important item: my wine glass. I poured up a glass of Vodka (I know that its not wine, but it is alcohol, which is all the same) and watched him complete the desk that I had stopped working on. It was such a beautiful evening.

FIRST AID KIT

The other day while washing dishes, I actually broke one of my beloved wine glasses. I was so sad about breaking it. It was a glass from Target that I got during Christmas, and it said ‘Holiday Cheer.’ I liked to drink out of it even when it wasn’t the holidays because it put me in a festive mood. Then I looked at my hand and realized it was bleeding. I calmly walked to my bathroom to get a band-aid and alcohol wipes or something, until I realized…wrong house. None of those items were in there. I ran warm water over it and got it to stop bleeding, then I went out to get my supplies. Next time I accidentally injure myself (which prayerfully doesn’t happen), I will be ready!

I’m still buying items and decorating to make my house feel more like a home. Just last month I bought lightbulbs for two lamps that I have had in my living room since December. (I never actually use the lamps. They are honestly just for decoration, but if I choose to turn them on, I can now.) This is clearly a process, but it’s coming along just fine.

What are some of the essentials that you bought when you first moved out on your own?
